Our original data

Two numbers most roundups never measure, scored the same way for all 20 apps. This is our own research, not the apps' marketing — and we score it honestly, so the most forgiving app isn't automatically our top pick, and neither is the most upfront about money. They're here to help you weigh an app on what matters to you.

Comeback factor

How easily — and how shame-free — the app gets you going again after you miss a few days. Forgiving streaks, an easy way back in and no guilt score high; lost progress, a dead tree or a streak that stings score low. Our own score (1–5), dated June 2026 — higher is more forgiving.

Upfront honesty

How restrained the onboarding is about money, and how clear the no-cost path. A genuinely usable no-cost tier or a plain one-off purchase scores high; an upsell wall before the app does anything scores low. Our own score (1–5), dated June 2026 — higher is more honest.

FAQ

How does the compare tool work?

Every app is scored on the same rubric and the table is ordered by that overall score. Use the filters to show only apps with, say, a no-cost tier or a website blocker, and the sort menu to reorder by score, comeback factor or upfront honesty.

What are the comeback-factor and upfront-honesty indices?

Two pieces of our own original data: how forgiving each app is when you fall off, and how honest it is about money at the start — each scored the same way (1–5) for all 20 apps. They're our editorial estimates as of June 2026, the things most roundups never measure, and our top pick leads neither.

A note on these apps: Everything here is general productivity and motivation information, not medical guidance. These apps are tools rather than treatment, and nothing on this page is meant to diagnose or manage a health condition. Persistent procrastination can sit alongside anxiety, depression or ADHD — if that fits you, treat an app as a complement to professional help, not a stand-in for it. When you are genuinely stuck, talk to a qualified professional.
Struggling, not just stalling? Most procrastination is ordinary. But if putting things off has tipped into hopelessness, or you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out today. In the US and Canada, calling or texting 988 connects you with a trained counsellor at no cost, any hour. Anywhere else, contact your local emergency line. You do not have to handle this on your own.

Dominic runs the desk and does the long testing himself. Each app sits on his own phone and laptop through real deadlines — a fortnight at least, usually longer — and he logs what it changed about how the work got done before it ever earns a number on the shared scorecard.
